I would strongly advise you do not buy FFX, as it is awful.
It's not an RPG, But Kessen 2 is a great game IMO and involves much strategy. I dont like the current RPG's, I relied upon Squaresoft, But they went rapidly down-hill after FF7.

For RPGs, my top suggestions (yours may vary) go in this order.
Sukoden III
Kingdom Hearts
Wild ARMs III
.Hack//INFECTION
Final Fantasy X (Some dislike it, but you may dig this)
Grandia II (not to be confused with "Grandia Xtreme")
However, my top suggestion for the PS2 is not an RPG, it is...
Guilty Gear XX! I have played this game non stop since I got it, my thumb is bleeding. This game has the best and most original characters in a video game in my opinion. The graphical style is absolutely gorgeous, it feels like you're playing an anime. This game has tons of extras besides the usual Arcade mode, the best of these is the "story mode" where each character has 3 different endings, and only after you get all of them will you understand the mystery. You will spend more time getting everything than in Super Smash Brothers Melee. Keep in mind, I am a 2D fighter fan, so you might like it less, but overall I'd give it a 10 out of 10. Perfect.

Suikoden III is good stuff, and though I don't like Kingdom Hearts, many people do.

I got some freeware thing from a group called Lavasoft. They cleared alot of the ads stored on my system. No more crazy popups on this board.
