I live on an island to... but it's not that close to D.C. Still on the East Coast, but well north of D.C.

Things like this happen everyday in other countries... and you don't see the US reacting to that.

That's cause the U.S. is America. It's special.
No really, more people have died in many more situations than 9/11. I don't see the U.S. doing anything. Like the holocaust, the U.S. stayed out of W.W. II untill they felt they were threatened by the Japanese.

I don't think that crime rates have gone up really. This stuff happens all the time. Anybody remember Columbine and all the school shootings? This sort of thing is always around now. My best friend from junior high was murdered in a "small town". As a matter of fact, I live in a fairly large city now and I see less crime and general wierdness than what goes on in supposedly safe small towns. Don't get complacent people.

Sorry to hear about that.
The crime rates have gone up across the country though. Last year was the first increase in violent crime(this excluded Sept. 11th) in ten years.

It is definitely true. The media is to blame for the U.S's dedication to one cause. In the 2 weeks the sniper was in Maryland and VA, he killed about 10 i think. There were 20 normal homicides (not linked) during that period, but nobody heard about them.

That's because the sniper was unusual, people get killed all the time, not terribly exciting news anymore (which is a really really sad thing...) but if you didn't know the person, you really aren't going to be interested in the story, and if you DO know the person, the only reason your reading it is because you know the person...
