You mean the same time and effort in FF6 and 7 as FFX and FFspirits within?

You mean the same time and effort in FF6 and 7 as FFX and FFspirits within? No, if they put the same time, money, and effort into FFX that they put into FFspirits.

No, if they put the same time, money, and effort into FFX that they put into FFspirits. No, if they put the same blah, money, and blahblah into FFX that they put into FFspirits. I really think they are rushing the series. FF7 came out, year and half later(ish) FF8 came out, then in like 5 months FF9 came out, and then in a little over 5 months FFX came out! And if anyone gets picky about the exact time figures i posted...

Wasn't there a problem with the making of Xenogears too, like them running out of money once they'd completed CD1 or something, and 2 had a lot less stuff in it.

I feel that the major be all end all point is that back then (the golden age of rpgs) games were not mainstream. SNES was not the same as playstation in its ad and selling power. Not that games are more mainstream, and less of a cult thing Square and other companies that recieve mainstream success have not gotten wrose they just need to "dummy" down their games for a wider audience. For example, my 7 year old cousin plays and has beat all 3 playstation FF's, yet he thinks the SNES ones suck. ITs the whole eye candy thing. Also, if Square can save one or two series for the hardcore gamer (Chrono and SaGa, for example) id be happy. I think if Square can sell millions of FF's, then they can take a chance and release more experimental hardcore content like Xenogears and Chrono Cross. Fair enough Square?

Yeah, but with new releases on the horizon like Xenosaga, Chrono Break, and Unlimited SaGa, don't you think even those franchises will succumb to the same problems as FF? The SaGa series has been around for a while, but the Chrono and Xeno series are just blossoming, with potential to thrive for years to come. All video gamed series' with any kind of longevity will face the same problems that face FF(look what happend to games like Tomb Raider and Twisted Metal). It's how the companies deal with the problems and how gamers/customers react that shows how good or bad the particular series is.

Good point, but i believe Square knows what people expect from a series. Xenosaga is being made by a diff compant anyway and i believe will be a pretty awesome game and series, if they do it right, also Chrono will stay good if Square keeps the developement teams on it that wanna try new things and arent afraid to experiment. FF on the other hand needs to have a lil innovation but enough of the same taste to bring people (the casual gamer) back to it. Also have you noticed that younger teams (age wise) are better at making good games today then the older teams that are set in their ways? I dunno whenever i see a game preview and see the same producer at square doing it i worry he wont want to innovate...hmm just my opinion

Your right about ppl on the development teams. I also agree with you that Square knows what a gamer expects from their games. But sometimes that can be a bad thing. Square knew that gamers wanted awesome graphics, and that what we got, at the expense of other important aspects. Don't get me wrong, FFX is my fav behind 6 & 7. But was so dissapointed in it. I thought the total package was going to blow me away, but the only thing the blew me away was the graphics.

[glow=red,2,300]I agree, FF10 had awesome graphics and some cool moments but the over package didnt stick with me, it was a good FF game (and lets face it even a bad FF is still a pretty good game) but i wish it had more...emotion, like those 16 bit rpgs with lil sprites...those were the days. Thats why im hoping some of the big wigs at Square retire or go into the business end, a new generation of developers with memories of those games we used to play as a backbone to their ideas. The old guard is too worried about making money and selling the most games....btw the only two old game gods i can think of that still do good work are Miyamoto and the DW guy, forgot his name...[/glow]

It's amazing how little 16-bit sprites could spark so much emotion and today's graphics with all their flash fail to convey anything.

Well, its kind of like with movies now too. A lot of them have gone to computer special effects(which in my opinion look like shit) and forgot something called plot. Even in action movies sometimes they put in lame ass action and rely on visuals.

Yeah, think Star Wars. It has gone way done hill, and AOTC was a let down. No shit, I hate episodes 1 and 2. Episode 5 is the one and only true masterpiece of Star Wars.
