I've read about this game but only heard bad things. It's for playstation, right? I know editors sometimes overlook how great a game is so what's it like and how great is it really?

Well it does have it's problems, but I just enjoy this game so much, I have a few probs with this game, leaders are almost impossible to level fully when they start below lvl 10 (max lvl is 30), it's even hard when they're 15. No items like herbs and antidotes. But, the battles are large, lots of units, which increases the strategy involved because if your like me and refuse to lose a unit depending on the situation, it can be a hard task.
Your army consists of monsters, who can evolve at levels 10 and 20 (some), some suck (like ghouls), but they are awesome when they evolve (again some, like ghouls) Leaders can be insane, but they have a HUGE weakness, when they die they're entire unit reatreats, and if the leader of your entire army dies the whole army retreats. You can dispatch 3 units to a battle.
This game has a bit of humour, and the story is about a rebellion of a powerhungry general who ended the last war. He rebels against Almekia and forms the Esgares Empire. There are 6 countries in this game: Esgares, New Almekia, Caerleon, Iscalio, Norgard, and Leonia. Caerleon and New Almekia are allies, and the rest are independent.
Ranged units are scarce. The only creature who's ranged is the centaur (owns), and it shoots 2 hexes before it evolves when it then shoots 3 hexes. You may not think this is a lot but it really is.Archers are a leader type and they are very good.
You can only perform one action per turn. But an acception is when you move and attack, that's all you can do on the same turn. You can't move and cast a spell. This, to me, is an extra part of strategy in placing your units in good spots.
I think this game is well worth it. ;D
