so, as fans of S/TRPGs (i tend to seperate tactical grid games from other strategy rpgs in my mind) i would like some input.
you see, i have 2 programmer friends, a graphics designer friend and my older brother who does it for a living, 2 friends who write and make music, and myself. i am a history major/philosophy minor and fiction writer.
the base idea of the game, so far, is as follows: a mixture of rts/rpg and srpg. sounds a little bit strange, but ill explain later. so far, you play as a "bad guy" (think something like delita. not bad, but definately bad compared to the "good guys") who starts the game fairly strong, say level 20. he is not a grunt weakling in the army, but neither is he a higher-up (again, like delita early on, or maybe like Oz and Ozma.) the game is a regular rpg for most battles, final fantasy, dragon quest kind of fights, 4 characters on screen (as i have always loathed 3 character setups. ruins my whole 1 strong 1 fast 1 mage 1 healer thing) that you level and such normally. however, as you progress, you start to build a small corps of your loyal soldiers, and will get into larger and larger tactical rpg battles. something like ogre battle, or warcraft 3 without the buildings. these will take place in pivotal storyline battles, or for your territory.
the game would be a sort of celtic/gallic/germanic/scand mix, large land mass with invading armies with purposes you dont understand to begin with. i am tired of that same feudal japan/china or medieval europe. think like the greco-roman days, what was happening beyond the borders of greece, rome, macedonia etc. as you grow stronger, and you gain more control, you start to gain territory, like fiefs. these will be invaded from time to time, like FFTA, and you must fight the attackers off on the srpg screen.
ive yet to make any characters or real story for it, and my friends have only begun the very basics of programming. we want to make it something like 10 chapters long, each chapter being a base 2-3 hour game, sidequests aside. we want to make a trial, first chapter kind of thing, to see how it goes before really working on the game overall. think final fantasy 7, up to say the meeting with aeris in length and content. you have the very tip of the iceberg, know some of the main characters and the sub-plotline that gets into the main plot.
let me know what you guys think about this. i could use some help with ideas, or names, or anything else people would like. the point of the game isnt great graphics or lots of money or anything like that. we are poor, mostly college kids who want to make something WORTHY of what we played growing up. a severe lack of good games these days.
